Chitwan National Park is going to start translocating rhinos internally from today. As the number of rhinos increased in the western part of the park, the four rhinos there are going to be transferred to the eastern part of the park.

A few years ago, the internal relocation of rhinoceros was studied, but only last year, the internal relocation of rhinoceros was started. Six rhinos were transferred last year.

According to Dr. Ganesh Pant, chief conservation officer of the park, all preparations have been completed for the internal relocation work. He said that the technical team has started preparations for the transfer of rhinoceros from the Amaltari sector in the western region. The elephants of the park, technical manpower, personnel, army deployed for security and other manpower will be used to relocate the rhinoceros.

He said, 'Now we are transferring two male and two female rhinos.' According to the report of the study team formed by the National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Department, the rhinos are about to be relocated. In the report, it was mentioned that 60 percent of the rhinos are in the western region from Kasara and if they can be relocated, the habitat will be easier. He informed that the adult rhinos will be transferred. He added, 'Now the work of monitoring the rhinoceros is being done.' It is estimated that it will take two weeks to transfer the rhinoceros.

According to the information officer of the park, Avinash Thapa Magar, it is expected that with the relocation of the rhinoceros, there will be contact between the rhinoceros of the west and the east to help in reproduction. He said that preparations are being made to release the rhinoceros brought from the western region to Khagendramalli and Parydhap regions in the eastern region. He informed that a team including the director general of the department, Dr. Ramchandra Kandel, had come to Chitwan to relocate the rhinos.

Three years ago, the department formed a study team under the leadership of Deputy Director General Bed Kumar Dhakal for the translocation of rhinoceros. According to the latest count, there are 752 rhinos in Nepal. Out of which there are 38 rhinos in Bardia and 17 rhinos in Shuklaphanta. There are 694 rhinos in Chitwan National Park. There are three rhinos in Parsa National Park.
