55 bridges in the Pathlaiya-Dhalkebar section under the East-West Highway are in a dangerous condition. Due to cracked beams (girders) on the Bagmati river bridge connecting Rautahat and Sarlahi, traffic has become more dangerous. Only one vehicle is allowed to pass at a time after the beam is split. According to Road Division Office Chandranigahpur, the beam installed on spur number 7 on the east side of the bridge has cracked about 8 cm. "If four/five freight vehicles start passing over the bridge at once, an accident may occur," said Prakash Yadav, engineer of the road office.
According to Police Inspector Lokendra Adhikari of District Traffic Office Rautahat, traffic police have been deployed to arrange the entry/exit of only one vehicle at a time on Bagmati bridge. After receiving information that the beam of the bridge was cracked, the Bridge Division inspected it on Tuesday. According to the division road, bearings are installed on the pillars of the bridge. It is sloped by placing girders on it. Engineer Yadav said that the girder had cracked and had to be repaired. Local Gopal Ghimire said that despite repeatedly telling the road division about the deterioration of the Bagmati bridge, they did not show interest in repairing it.
Bakiya bridge, Pasah bridge, Dudhaura bridge, No. 1 bridge, No. 2 bridge, No. 3 bridge, Rautahat towards Chandi, Lamaha, Bagmati bridge etc. are dilapidated. Dudhaura bridge is under construction after being washed away twice. Some other parts of the bridge in Bara area are about to stick to the ground. The Bagmati bridge sank 6 inches and the Chandi bridge 4 inches a year ago. It was then repaired by Gouriparvati Himalayan JV Company. There are also problems such as broken railings and potholes in other bridges of the highway. The relevant agencies have not been able to regulate even when driving vehicles that exceed the load capacity.
The bridge from Bara's Pathlaiya to Dhanusha's Dhalkevar was built in 2026 with the help of the then Soviet Union. The road in this section is 9 meters wide and the bridge is only 5 meters wide. More than 5,000 vehicles pass through the east-west highway every day. Due to the old and narrow bridge, there is a problem in the movement of vehicles. There is a problem of traffic jams due to the narrow bridge. An accident can occur when there is a jam on the dilapidated bridge,'' said the police inspector of the traffic office.
Nepal Police Highway Safety and Traffic Management Office DSP Leila Lamichhane of Pathalaiya said that the traffic jams at Pasaha in Bara, Bakaiya in Nijgarh and Lamaha in Rautahat, Chandi, and Bagmati bridge were disturbing. Locals say that the beams of most of the bridges on the highway are old and if they are not repaired immediately, an accident may occur at any time.
Head of Bridge Division Lalijan Khanal said that the problem has arisen because the bridges on the East-West highway are old. He said that the new bridge will also be built during the four-lane construction of the east-west highway, so there will be no problem after that. According to the department, the contract for the upgradation of 77 km road from Kamala to Bagmati has been awarded. Vijay Jaisi, Deputy Director General of the Roads Department informed that there are 76 bridges in this section.
