Home Minister Ramesh Akhtar has said that journalism is the guardian of democracy. While congratulating the newly elected officials of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists at the Ministry of Home Affairs at Singhdarbar, the Home Minister said that fair journalism is the pillar of democracy.

"Our constitution has 'guaranteed' complete freedom of the press," he said, "the government ensures an environment of independent, professional and fair journalism."

The Home Minister assured that the freedom and professionalism of journalism will be guaranteed in any way. He emphasized that journalism should be dignified, orderly and based on truth.

'I urge you to protect yourself and the media from activities such as spreading fictitious news, creating unnecessary confusion in the society, character assassination of individuals, society and communities,' the minister said, 'if such activities increase, the trust in the media as a whole will weaken.'

Nirmala Sharma, Central President of Nepal Journalist Federation, thanked the government for the role played by the Federation of Journalists in conducting the elections in a peaceful environment. In addition, she submitted a letter of attention to the Minister of Home Affairs, demanding action against those involved in the violation of press freedom.
