The 100-year-old Jairam Chepang couple, who live in a very narrow shack that allows sunlight to penetrate, are shocked to find a new house with a leaky toilet. The family of Karn Gurung, who is living in America, built a house for the childless Jairam couple.
Former Urban Development Minister Ram Kumari Jhankri led the Chepang couple into the house built under the leadership of Rekha Lopchan Tamang, an activist of Raksirang Rural Municipality-5 of Makwanpur.
Entering the room with carpet and two beds with bed, Jairam said in Chepang language, 'Kim Doti Aasteaya (I am glad to be home).' He also wore a loose blue shirt to cover the upper part of his body.
vs. Born in 1981, wife Lakshmi Chepang, who is 10 years younger than Jairam, greeted everyone saying that she was able to live in a new house. Jairam, who is now bearded, walks with a limp. 90-year-old Lakshmi is a bit more agile than him.
Jairam was married to a woman even before Lakshmi. He had no children. She married another man from the village. After he left, Jairam married Lakshmi at the age of 51. No children were born from him either. Kokil Chepang, who is a cousin, has been taking care of this couple. The Chepang couple is running expenses from social security allowance. "The old age allowance has saved us," says the neighbor Nar Bahadur Chepang, "Kokil, who is a nephew of Puganpug, has been making money." There are drinking water taps and fixed toilets. Abhiyanta Rekha has also provided 2 lakh 42 thousand rupees in cash to them. Chepang community is living in that settlement, which is 2 hours walk away from Manhari Bazar, but under the public housing program of the government, although the building is under construction, they were deprived of the program because they did not own the land in their name.
Former minister Jhankri said that the procedures of Janata Awas program should be revised as it is not poor and disadvantaged. "A land commission is formed, but the problems of marginalized and endangered communities like Chepang, Raute, Vankaria are not solved," she said.
Raksirang Chepang community of Makwanpur is a municipality with majority. According to the 2078 census, the population of Chepang community living in 26 districts of the country is 84 thousand 364. There are 23 thousand 650 in Makwanpur, 35 thousand 637 in Chitwan, 17 thousand 160 in Dhading and 4 thousand 268 in Gorkha.
