It is recommended to hold the Independent Students Union (SVA) elections on the campus of Tribhuvan University on Chait 5. The meeting held on Monday by the Student Welfare Council recommended to the Executive Council to hold the SWVU election on that date.
After the Executive Council approves the recommendation, the election date will be announced.
The date of Swaviyu elections has been fixed on February 15 in Trivi annual calendar. But in 2079 also, since the election was held on Chait 5, it was recommended to hold the election on the same date, informed Pashupati Adhikari, member secretary of the council and head of the student welfare directorate.
"It was proposed on Chait 5, considering that it would be appropriate to elect a new Swaviyu after the completion of the tenure of the elected officials in 2079," he said. There is an arrangement that the council chaired by the Rector of the university will recommend the election date and the election date will be fixed after approval by the Executive Council chaired by the Vice-Chancellor. There is a system of representation in the student council from the dean, the campus head and the president of SWU.
Before the announcement of the election date, the work such as registration, examination, compilation of voter's list should be completed. The term of the elected Swaviyu is two years.
In 2079, elections were held in 50 out of 64 official campuses. Along with the official, there is a system of electing student representatives through elections in community and some private campuses.
Trivika has more than 1 thousand campuses. The member secretary officer said that the campus head will appoint an election officer and an assistant to conduct the election on the specified date. The Campus Head will also be the Patron of Swaviyu.
Age limit of 28 years and mixed election system has been implemented in SWVYU elections. There is a provision that the chairman, secretary and treasurer are elected directly and the members including vice chairman and joint secretary are elected proportionally. Students elected from Swaviyu are represented in the important bodies of the campus from the University Assembly. Since 2063, regular self-government elections have not been held in the university.
Even in 2079, elections could not be held in some big campuses of districts including Kathmandu. Ratnarajya Lakshmi Campus (RR), Trichandra, Vishwabhasha, Nepal Commerce Campus Kathmandu, Prithvi Narayan Campus, Western Engineering and Pokhara Nursing Campus, Virendra Multipurpose Campus Bharatpur, Thakurram Multipurpose Campus Birgunj, Doti Multipurpose Campus and Siddhanath Science Campus Mahendranagar were not able to hold elections.
