The Supreme Court Bar Association has said that it has drawn attention to the physical attack, verbal abuse and threatening actions against senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi on January 2.
In a press release issued today by the secretary of the association, Raman Kumar Karna, it has been stated that the behavior of senior advocate Tripathi, a member of the bar association, has been drawn to the anarchist group on the basis of arguments on behalf of the accused while leaving the court after debating the ongoing organized crime and fraud case in the Kathmandu District Court.
'The right to defend oneself through a legal practitioner is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution of Nepal. It is the opinion of the Bar Association that assaults and any kind of physical and mental attacks on legal professionals are a well-planned attack not only on legal professionals but also on the independent judiciary and the constitution as a whole,' the statement said.
Bar Association has requested the Ministry of Home Affairs and related agencies to conduct a fair and independent investigation based on the eyewitnesses, videos and related evidence of this incident, and take immediate action against the culprits in accordance with the law and make necessary arrangements to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future.
Bar said that since such incidents obstruct the justice performance of the independent judiciary, all parties need to be sensitive to this as such actions are also acts of contempt of the court.
