The young man's family was displaced from Miklajung-7 Limba after increasing pressure not to report the incident to the police
The suspicious death of 25-year-old Tej Bahadur Thegim, who went hunting with Amar Makhim, president of Miklajung Rural Municipality of Panchthar, has been kept secret for a month. The young man's family has been displaced from Miklajung-7 Limba after increasing pressure not to report the incident to the police.
According to the locals, Tej Bahadur had gone to Jaisevir forest to play hunting with Chairman Makhim last November 21. A group of about 10 killed two Ghorals.
After bringing the killed Ghoral to Kanyatar, some people including Chairman Makhim told the locals that they had to go for emergency work, so they would cook and eat. They took Tej Bahadur's body to Urlabari in Morang and took it to the trauma center for post-mortem and funeral.
The family members got the news of the death only the next day. "My brother's friend, Rajkumar Tamang, called me the next morning at 7:00 a.m. and told me that while he was going to cut bullets in the forest, my brother fell and was injured, and that we are bringing him for treatment," said Tej Bahadur's sister Bishnumaya, who lives in Baigundhura, Jhapa. When they reached there, they said that they were going to do the post-mortem as the brother had passed away. They took her to the police office and made her apply for Sadgat, said Bishnumaya.
According to Rakesh Chowdhury, chief police inspector of Urlabari area police office, Tej Bahadur was given a post-mortem after the people who took him to the hospital requested that he died after falling from fear. In the application given to the police for post-mortem, it is mentioned that 'he died at the Madan Bhandari Trauma Center during the treatment of the injured after falling from the mountain'. However, he was already dead when he was brought to the trauma center. Promise Budhathoki says.
According to him, Tej Bahadur's head was injured, his ribs were broken, blood was pooled in his stomach. It was said that he fell and died while carrying wood. Budhathoki said, "I suggested to take him to BP Koira Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan to find out the exact cause of death, but I was asked to do the post-mortem here." "Let's look at my brother's face once, but don't look at it now, if the funeral has to be done quickly. When we were taken to the ghat near Miklajung's house, we became suspicious when someone told us that someone fell while trying to cut bullets, someone was bitten by an aringal, and someone said that the incident happened when they went hunting,'' she said. After crying, he raised his face. It was a deep injury. At that time, some people, including the ward president, said that they should be cremated quickly, so we cremated them," she said.
After listening to the villager, Vishnumaya said that she remembered that she was corrected on a blank paper in Urlabari. "And think that the death is suspicious and search for a report," she said. However, some people including the ward president pressured him not to complain anywhere. "Whatever happened, it's a poor family, we will help," she said.
Sharan Bahadur, Tej Bahadur's father, said that no one had given any information about how the incident happened. "There was a hole in the head where the old finger could penetrate," he said, "He had gone to go hunting with the village chairman. How did that happen!'
Miklajung-7 ward member Sinharaj Tamang says he did not know about the incident until the cremation was done. After the funeral, they came asking to correct the statement that he died after falling. On it, it was written that he fell from Bhir when he was going to cut the bullet," he said, "I heard that he went to kill Ghoral. That's why I didn't correct the bond.'
President Makhim expressed ignorance about the incident. He said that he was informed that Tej Bahadur had been bitten by a stingray. "I asked him to take me for treatment, in the morning the news came that he had died," he said. As he has a licensed firearm He said that they are trying to politicize. One of the locals said that he saw Tej Bahadur Rural Municipality Chairman going to play hunting.
The deceased's sister Bishnumaya along with uncle Rajkumar and father Sharan Bahadur tried to lodge a complaint at the district police office on December 14. However, after the police did not take it, the family reported that they filed a complaint through the post office and the district administration office. In the complaint, action has been demanded against 7 people including Municipal Chairman Makhim, Rajkumar Tamang of Miklajung-7, Dicken Tamang, Dhanprasad Tamang and Dostihang Makhim.
DSP Kaushal Kumar Budhathoki admitted that the complaint regarding Tej Bahadur's death was not registered initially. He said that Bishnumaya filed a complaint with the Urlabari police and cremated the dead body and buried it, and since the time to investigate the same complaint is 2 years, there is no need to register a second complaint. "I wanted to remind you that it is not necessary to take two complaints in the same incident," Budhathoki said. DSP Budhathoki also said that the investigation of the
incident has been started and 7 people have been detained and interrogated. He said that the driver of the vehicle used to carry the dead body and his relatives were also called for questioning. "The contradiction has come out that he fell and was bitten by an aringal at 11 o'clock in the night," he said. Being taken to another district for post-mortem, not being allowed to see the body until the end, and going to the public representative to ask for the correction of the bond after the funeral has increased the suspicion.'
Chief District Officer Bishnu Prasad Koirala says that it is against the procedure to take the post-mortem to Jhapa without informing the family, public representatives, police and neighbors about the incident. After burning the body, many evidences have been destroyed. However, the police administration has proceeded with the investigation, he said.
After the death of Tej Bahadur, his family has been displaced from the village. Tej Bahadur has a wife and father at home. Now they are in Bishnumaya's house. "Don't complain, they are putting pressure on us by saying that we will provide the necessary assistance. If the head of the ward and some elders of the village make a complaint, they say that it will be difficult for you," said Sharan Bahadur. Bishnumaya said that her daughter-in-law was pregnant and the due date was given on January 7.
