The Nepal Construction Industry Council has requested Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to pay arrears and create a physical infrastructure-friendly environment to end the contraction seen in the construction sector.

In a meeting with Prime Minister Oli on Tuesday evening at the Prime Minister's residence, officials including the chairman of the council, Balibhadra Rana, drew the attention of Prime Minister Oli to the issues including amendments to the public procurement regulations, price adjustments in the contracts, taking into account the increase in prices of construction materials such as rods, cement, etc.

Prime Minister Oli informed that some amount of the construction business has been paid and he has given instructions to the relevant agencies to facilitate the process of payment of the remaining amount.

Prime Minister Oli asked construction professionals not to compromise on quality, saying that due to the process of awarding the contract with the lowest amount, quality construction work has not been done in some places. Clarifying that any work that does not meet the quality standards will not be acceptable to the government, he said that the potential risks are taken into account while estimating the cost.

Noting that the government has given development and construction a high priority, the Prime Minister recalled the successful completion of post-earthquake reconstruction in the past.
