Former IGP Sarbendra Khanal has left UML. Khanal has said on social media that he is not affiliated with any political party. Khanal has not been seen in any formal party program for some time.
'Gentlemen, I would like to make it clear through this that I am not affiliated with any political party at present. I am working independently to solve local and national problems. I will always do my best for the welfare of the country and society,' he said.
Khanal said that he is not planning to join any party immediately or open a party. He says that he will take steps independently according to the time and circumstances. 'I want to remain independent. I am not joining any party now. I have no plans to open a party,' Khanal told Ikantipur.
Khanal entered politics less than 3 years after completing 30 years of service in the Nepal Police. He was inducted into the party by UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli on Asoj 6, 2079. In the 2079 House of Representatives elections, he was defeated by Shishir Khanal of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Party from Kathmandu-6. While Shishir Khanal got 14,204 votes, former IGP Khanal got only 8,911 votes.
Within 6 months of his defeat in Kathmandu-6, he became a UML candidate in the by-election held in 2080 Baisakh. In that by-election too, he lost to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak candidate. While the Rashtriya Swayamsevak candidate Swarnim Wagle got 34,918 votes, Khanal came in third place with 8,488 votes. In the by-election held after Ramchandra Poudel, the elected MP from Tanahun-2, became the President, Congress candidate Govinda Bhattarai got 20,122 votes.
