The rate of suicide in Nepal is constantly increasing. From the financial year 2078/079 to last November, 23 thousand 275 people have committed suicide. The number of suicides is higher in men than in women.

Compared to boys, the number of girls commit suicide is more. By October, 7 thousand 565 women, 13 thousand 40 men and 2 thousand 670 children  There are statistics of Nepal Police who committed suicide.

Out of 2,670 suicides, 1,775 are girls and 895 are boys. At this time, the number of self-immolators is 17 people. According to the data provided by the Nepal Police, the suicide rate is very high. Which is also increasing.

In the financial year 2078/079, 6 thousand 830, 6 thousand 993 in 2079/080, 7 thousand 219 people committed suicide in 2080/081.  Since the beginning of the new financial year, 2,233 people have committed suicide till October. In the four months of the new fiscal year, 1,227 men and 686 women committed suicide. The number of boys is 104 and the number of girls is 216.

Somewhere in the world, every 40 seconds, someone commits suicide. According to the World Health Organization, WHO, nearly eight million people commit suicide every year. Children, parents, spouses, friends or colleagues are also directly affected by a person who commits suicide. A study conducted in the United States has shown that the actions of one person who commits suicide can affect about 135 other people.

Public health expert Deepak Tiwari says that people's lives have turned to despair due to the expectation of making quick money and financial reasons. Along with this, he says that the social and cultural aspect is also the reason for the increase in suicides. Earlier people also believed in dharmakarma. It used to be that sometimes we succeed and fail in life, but now people only want success. Social relations are also becoming weaker. It is his experience that some people do not have time to listen to others and suicide rates also increase due to mental illness.

Tiwari says that even though the state has made this issue a priority by celebrating various days and discussing the issue of suicide, it is insufficient. Tiwari said, "This should become a subject of all sectors, and comprehensive discussion and campaign will help to prevent suicide." In recent days, it is his experience that school nurses and other programs have also played a role in reducing it.

Government helpline number 1166 is in operation for people who are going through mental stress or are suffering from such stress.
