The parliamentary hearing committee has unanimously approved the name of Purna Bahadur Nepali as ambassador to Sri Lanka. The parliamentary hearing committee meeting held on Sunday has approved the Nepali as the resident ambassador of Sri Lanka and the non-resident ambassador of the Maldives.
After presenting the concept and action plan to the hearing committee, the proposed Nepalese ambassador answered the queries and questions of the parliamentarians. After that, the name of Nepali was unanimously approved by the chairman of the committee Ishwaridevi Neupane.
The meeting of the Council of Ministers on November 6 recommended Kapilvastu's Nepalese ambassador to Sri Lanka. Not a single complaint was filed against him in the hearing committee. There is a constitutional provision that the president appoints ambassadors after approval by the hearing committee.
The proposed Nepalese ambassador said that he would take the initiative of Nepal-Sri Lanka direct air flight while presenting the concept and action plan to the committee. Buddhists in Sri Lanka once wanted to come to Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, so they needed a direct flight.
The Nepalese said that they will take the initiative to expand and improve the air service between Nepal and Sri Lanka (initiative for new flights at Gautama Buddha International Airport) and to continue flights at Tribhuvan International Airport.
Nepali said that there should be bilateral educational, research and policy cooperation with Sri Lanka and for that he would take the initiative. He said that cooperation and partnership between the universities of the two countries will be done to establish research and think tanks. He said that 'soft power' including Mount Everest and Gautama Buddha's birthplace will be used to strengthen relations with Sri Lanka.
Parliamentary hearing committee members said after a long time that the government recommended a person from the Dalit community as ambassador. Congress Joint General Minister and Member of Parliament Jeevan Pariyar said that the recommendation was received after two years of the second term of the House of Representatives in accordance with the provision of Dalit reservation guaranteed by the Constitution.
He made suggestions for arranging student exchange between Nepal and Sri Lanka. He is an associate professor at Nepali Kathmandu University.
