The former vice president of UML, Vamdev Gautam, is going to join the United Socialist Party. He will be a senior leader in the Unified Socialists. He is going to be ranked third after President Madhav Kumar Nepal, respected leader Jhalnath Khanal. Senior Vice President Rajendra Pandey's ranking will be fourth.
Recently, Gautam had been saying, 'Whoever gives me the post of president, I will go there'. Sometimes he was communicating with UML president KP Sharma Oli, sometimes with Maoist president Pushpa Kamal Dahal. Recently, after formal-informal talks with the integrated socialist, he is ready to become the senior vice-president.
Gautam is now a member of the National Assembly. The then President Bidya Devi Bhandari nominated him as a member of the National Assembly on October 1, 2077, on the recommendation of the then CPN government (Oli-led cabinet). Gautam left UML on 18 August 2078. After that, he also ran the CPN unity campaign. In the general election of 2079, Gautam wrote the election song of the unified socialist.
After agreeing to accept the 'socialist program of Nepalese characteristics' passed by the Congress of Unified Socialists, the leaders said that Gautam's entry into the party was assured. The Congress of United Socialists last June passed the guidelines for scientific socialism with Nepali characteristics. "The name of the party is not above the ideas and principles passed by the United Socialist Party and Congress," said Beduram Bhusal, the vice president of the United Socialist Party.
Although Gautam is ready to be the senior vice president, Vice President Bhusal says that the division of duties of the leaders with him is being discussed.
"Wamdevji's CPN Ekta Abhiyan is said to be absorbed into CPN Unified Socialist, after the management of the leaders is finalized, his team will be absorbed into Unified Socialist," he said. Bhusal said that the decision will be reached after the discussion in the next phase. In the case of other leaders, the responsibilities will be distributed based on ability rather than percentage.
Leader Gautam mentioned that the discussion for unity is ongoing and said that the division of work of the leaders is still pending. "Discussions are going on for unity," he said, "There are still some issues of sharing the responsibilities of the leaders." He also said that there is no major dispute between the two sides on political, ideological and theoretical issues. "There is a proposal that we should move forward with the socialist agenda that I have developed," he said.
Jhalnath Khanal, a respected leader of the Integrated Socialists, said that there would be unity with Gautam only after agreeing on the ideological direction. He says that there is no discussion with him for unity. First, the ideological direction had to be agreed. We call it scientific socialism. If you believe in this, there is a possibility of unity,' he said, 'The main thing is that there should be a consensus.' Regarding the assessment that Gautam's entry into the party will increase infighting, Khanal says, 'If the leaders agree, it doesn't matter if there is a conflict.'
Khanal said that the justification of the multi-party democracy of the people, which was advocated by the leadership of then UML president Manmohan Adhikari and general secretary Madan Bhandari, has ended. "The multi-party democratic program was right until the capitalist democratic revolution. Now that revolution is over," he said, "now the stage of socialist revolution has begun. Therefore, we should proceed on the path of scientific socialism.
Gautam says that socialism is always scientific, so there is no dispute about it. "Where is unscientific socialism?" He said, "Socialism itself is scientific and practical." Last week's standing committee meeting of Samajwadi decided to discuss with Gautam for unity.
