On the day of Margashirsh Shukla Purnima today, the Kirat community is celebrating Udhauli festival as a sign of respect for their ancestors and nature.

On the occasion of Udhauli, the Yakkhas of the Kirat community celebrate Chasuwa, the Sunuwars Folsyadar, the Rai Udhauli Sakela and the Limbus celebrate Chasok Tangnam.

Kirtikumar Dumi Rai, who is researching about Kirat culture, says that although the tribes within Kirat give different names to this festival, it is generally known as Udhauli.

The Kirat community celebrates the Udhauli festival as a day to offer food to the god after the crops are ripe, ask for permission to eat and remember the ancestors. At the time of planting, the Kirat community has a tradition of celebrating Ubhauli festival.

Kirat men and women dress up in ethnic costumes and celebrate the festival with various sili (dances) since early morning doing Bhoomi Puja. Small Hattivan of Lalitpur is considered a historical and religious place since Kirat period. In Sano Hattivan today, Kirat festival is specially celebrated with worship.

After worship, it is customary to entertain by dancing Sakela Sili and Chabrung according to their own traditions. The Kirats who performed Ubhauli Puja on Vaishakh Shukla Purnima, today descend from above after Udhauli Puja. Culture researcher Rai said that it is also considered as environmentally friendly work. The process of going down in winter and going up to the lake in summer is considered as Udhauli and Ubhauli festival.

Ubhauli is worshiped for good farming and in Udhauli, Sakela (land) is thanked for good farming.
