Hark Sampang, the head of Dharan sub-metropolitan municipality, who is threatening journalists who write news about his "capricious" working style through Facebook, has also taken a dig against the police and the court.
By holding a press conference in Dharan on Thursday, he defended the threats given to journalists and said that he did not get the support of the police and the court when he tried to end the situation.
Journalist Gopal Dahal wrote a news story for the Investigative Journalism Center titled 'Mayor Sampang's whimsical rule, Bethiti's swamp thrashing'. After that, Sampang threatened Dahal and Janakrishi Rai, the President of Journalist Federation Sunsari, on social media on Wednesday.
He posted on social media on Facebook, "Gopal Dahal or some representative of Khoj Journalism Center will be present at the green tea of Dharan 18 tomorrow at 10 o'clock. Otherwise, he wrote a threatening status saying, "My name is Hark Sampang, if you don't end your investigative journalism".
Sampang's status was protested by organizations including the Federation of Journalists. In the press conference, Sampang accused the journalist of writing the news with prejudice. He claims that he did not show any discomfort. When asked why he threatened without going through the legal process if the news was not true, Sampang replied that he did not trust the court and the police administration.
He said that he did not seek legal treatment when he did not get the support of the police and the court when he tried to end the situation. "Not only labor has improved in Dharan, education has improved, health has improved. The employees are disciplined, I have taken out as soon as one rupee is below,' said Sampang, 'If the court and the police support me, I will kill the brokers in one day, but they have not helped me as the court and the police have said.' commented.
The journalists who gathered at the Sunsari Federation of Journalists on Thursday warned Sampang not to make threatening statements. Other organizations have also mentioned that the repeated threats against journalists are a mockery of democracy.
The Central Committee of the Federation of Journalists has decided that the chaotic and indecent actions of Sampang will discourage and frighten journalists towards their profession and will also harm the right to freedom of thought and expression. The federation has also demanded to respect the constitutional rights of the press and to create an environment to prevent such incidents from happening again.
