The Media Lawyers Association has objected that Harak Sampang, the mayor of Dharan sub-metropolitan city, acted against the rule of law by threatening journalists for writing news.
Advocate Baburam Aryal, president of Media Lawyers Association, issued a press release on Thursday and objected to journalist Gopal Dahal and Janak Rishi Rai, president of Nepal Journalist Federation Sunsari, writing threatening messages through social media.
Mayor Sampang's verbal abuse and threats violated the right to freedom of thought, expression and communication guaranteed by the Constitution of Nepal.
Similarly, it is stated in Aryal's statement that there is a violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Nepal is a party, and there is a serious violation of press freedom.
Mayor Sampang's actions are reprehensible and are against the freedom of the press. "It is against the rule of law and the minimum dignity of the mayor of Dharan to engage in public abuse regarding the subject of news. We urge Mayor Sampang to correct such actions immediately. In addition, we request the Nepal government to create a safe environment for journalists to do journalism,' the association demanded.
