The preparations for Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's official 4-day visit to China have been completed, according to the Beijing-based Nepali Ambassador Krishna Prasad Oli. Ambassador Oli said in a conversation with Kantipur that Prime Minister Oli will arrive in Beijing on Monday afternoon and will be busy with bilateral meetings on Tuesday.
Also, the ambassador informed that the time of Prime Minister Oli's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping has been fixed. He said that both countries have done the necessary homework for bilateral meetings. According to him, the agenda of the talks has also been prepared.
Foreign Minister Arju Rana has already informed the Chinese authorities about the Nepal government's proposal on Friday. According to the leaders, the draft was prepared after informal discussions with the Chinese side and there was a positive response to it. The draft is likely to be signed during Prime Minister Oli's visit to China. Foreign Minister Rana Chendu has returned to Nepal after meeting her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi to prepare for Prime Minister Oli's visit. Ambassador Oli, who participated in the meeting, then arrived in Beijing and is busy making arrangements for the visit.
Foreign Minister Rana has said that the BRI project in Nepal will proceed with the agreement of both countries. It has become a common opinion of the two ruling parties that the Nepal government will only take subsidies for the projects conducted under BRI. They made the policy of not taking loans in BRI project. A list of a dozen projects related to infrastructure, urban development and connectivity by Nepal has also been kept in the draft of the BRI cooperation framework.
The Nepal side has proposed Tokha-Khare tunnel, Hilsa-Simkot road, Kimathanka-Khandbari road and bridge, Geelong-Kerung-Kathmandu cross-border railway, Kathmandu-Hetaunda podway, Amargadhi City Hall, Geelong-Kerung-Rasuwagadhi Chilime 220 kV cross-border for BRI. Transmission Line, Kathmandu Valley Transmission Line Upgradation, Madan Bhandari University, Kathmandu Scientific Center and Science Museum, China-Nepal Industrial Friendship Park and Jhapa Sports and Athletics Complex are about to move forward with the project.
Although the Memorandum of Understanding on BRI was signed between Nepal and China in 2017, no project under it has been started in Nepal. For the past few years, China has been stipulating that an implementation plan should be agreed for the implementation of the project. If the cooperation framework is signed, the door will open for BRI project operation in Nepal.
