The Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed the local administration to stop such illegal activities after receiving complaints from the transporters that the municipalities are illegally collecting taxes on the roads. The Ministry has given this instruction by sending an information letter to all 77 administration offices across the country in the second week of this October.
From the letter of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (Traffic Management Branch) dated November 11th, regarding the collection of various types of taxes by the local governments on the National Highway/Subsidiary Highway, the decision of the Government of Nepal (Council of Ministers) on November 17, 2075 and the action plan prepared by the Ministry of Finance to the relevant agencies for implementation. Regarding the suspension of the said work after the correspondence, as various local governments are currently collecting taxes, they have written to instruct the relevant district administration offices/bodies to stop the said work, so there is a request for necessary coordination,' said the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Earlier, the transport businessmen had met the Minister of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Devendra Dahal, and drew his attention to stop the collection of taxes.
The Senior Vice President of the National Federation of Nepalese Travel Traders, Saroj Sitaula, said that on October 8th, he submitted a letter to the Ministry of Transport to stop the collection of taxes from the local government. So Based on the letter, the ministry sent a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs on November 11th, and on November 12th, the Ministry of Home Affairs sent a letter to the district administration offices across the country.
Sitaula said that after it was found that the various municipalities of the country were continuing the work of tax collection that was stopped by the government, there is hope that it will be stopped as the necessary instructions have been sent from the home to stop the work.
The cabinet meeting of 075 decided to stop tax collection. The Ministry of Finance has made an action plan for the implementation of the said decision and has already implemented it .
