Prime Minister's request to strongly raise the issue of climate justice in COP-29

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has directed the relevant ministries and agencies to strongly raise the issue of climate justice that Nepal has put on the platform of the 79th United Nations General Assembly at the World Climate Conference (COP-29) to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan in November 2024.
At the third meeting of the National Council for Environmental Protection and Climate Change Management held at the office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on Friday, Prime Minister Oli requested that Nepal's clear stance and approach on climate change, which were made during the General Assembly's address and sideline meetings, be kept in COP-29.
Nepali delegation under the leadership of President Ramchandra Paudel is scheduled to participate in COP-29. Prime Minister Oli said that the mountains in Nepal are contributing to balancing the global temperature, as the inhabitants of the mountain regions are being affected by the melting of the mountains due to the carbon emissions in the world, Nepal should get proper compensation from the carbon emitting countries.
He demands the world community to come up with a plan for the balance of the environment from the mountains to the sea.
Prime Minister Oli directed to give priority to intensive forest expansion by ending the situation of no forests in the designated forest areas. He emphasized that although Nepal has 46 percent forest area, only 28 percent of the special forest area should be expanded to the remaining 12 percent area.
He urged to work to maintain at least 40 percent of the forest area and mentioned that Nepal is contributing to global environmental cleanliness by maintaining forests, mountains and lake basins. In Nepal, 17 percent of the land is mountains and 7 percent is lakes. Prime Minister Oli also instructed not to delay the approval of the Ministry of Forestry for the projects that the government has decided. The
meeting reviewed the work of the council for one year and informed about the status of implementation of the decisions of the previous meeting Nepal's effective participation in the World Climate Conference (COP-29) to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan in November 2024, changing the name of the Ministry of Forests and Environment to Forest, Environment and Climate Change and taking guidelines for the next one year have been decided.
