The government has increased the amount of relief given to dependent families of workers who died during foreign employment to 10 lakh rupees. Earlier, Rs 7 lakh was being given.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli announced the government's 100-day achievements on Wednesday. "The compensation amount given earlier to the families of those who died in foreign employment has been increased from Rs. 7 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh," said Oli. He said that the government will also provide 10 lakh rupees to those who died due to
medical expenses. Previously, there was no provision to give relief money for compensation to workers who died after receiving medical treatment.
Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security Sharatsingh Bhandari said that the foreign employment rule has been amended by the Council of Ministers to pay Rs 10 lakh to the dependent families of the deceased. When the main breadwinner of the family is lost, the family gets a big shock. Some families come to the streets. I had experienced the issue of Rs 7 lakh less that is being received now since I took over the ministry. After that, I formed a study team under the coordination of the Secretary of Labor. That team has recommended that considering the capacity of the Foreign Employment Welfare Fund, it is appropriate to give 10 lakh rupees. Based on that, the government has decided to increase the relief amount," Labor Minister Bhandari told Kantipur. "This amount will increase in the coming days according to the capacity of the fund." Before that, they were giving three lakh rupees. Labor Minister Bhandari said that the revised regulations will be implemented as soon as they are published in the gazette. Sub-rules 2 and 5 of section 28 of the Foreign Employment Regulations have been amended. This has been sent to the Ministry of Law for publication in the Gazette. It is being prepared for publication," he said.
The government established a foreign employment welfare fund in 2065 to provide relief money to the families of workers who died in foreign employment. Workers must deposit 1500 rupees in that fund before getting a two-year work permit. For a 5-year work permit, you have to deposit 2500 rupees. The
fund provided a relief amount of Rs 699.99 million to the dependent families of 1,346 workers who died in foreign employment last financial year. Apart from this,
fund is also doing other welfare work for the benefit of the workers. In which, providing free mortuary vehicle to bring dead bodies sent from abroad to Tribhuvan International Airport, providing medical expenses for sick and amputated workers, covering the medical expenses of workers' family members, providing expenses for bringing dead bodies, providing food to stranded foreign workers, etc. Orientation of women workers going to employment has been spent. Tikaram Dhakal, spokesperson of the board, said that the board spent 97.97 million rupees for these welfare activities last year.
