As the night draws in, Thamel's Mahendra Maharjan can't sleep happily. The only reason she can't sleep is because of the loud noise pollution, as she lives near the Chhaya Center. The night business of Thamel, which was closed after the Covid epidemic, has been resumed since last May.

After the government said that Thamel and Durbarmarg areas will be open 24 hours, the night business of Thamel has started running . With the aim of making the night tourism business dignified and disciplined, the businessmen have made and implemented a code of conduct. Maharjan said that even though the established code of conduct is implemented by the businessmen, noise pollution is caused by noise pollution around Thamel if visitors who come to have fun in clubs and dance bars for a short time do not comply.

Locals say that the biggest problem of Thamel's night business is noise pollution. Residents of Thamel and the surrounding areas were affected by noisy people, hotels and clubs playing loud music. "We have been requesting the clubs and hotels several times, so far there has been no hearing," he said. Maharjan, who has been stressing that not only the locals but also the guests and tourists staying in the hotel should organize the thumel, mentioned that

Tourism businessman Bhavishwar Sharma said that because of not being able to sleep at night in the hotel, the affected tourists are complaining about their health problems. He, who is also the former chairman of the Thamel Tourism Development Council, informed that the locals, tourists and businessmen are suffering due to non-compliance of the code of conduct made for 24-hour operation. 'Tourists complain about noise pollution,' Sharma said, 'They throw glass bottles on the road after drinking alcohol. Playing loud songs and music till late at night in the name of fun is making it difficult for us to spend the night here.'  According to

Sharma, there are 36,000 hotels in Thamel area with the capacity to accommodate and eat. He said that even though internal and external tourists are increasing due to covid, the night tourism business could not be organized. Sharma, former chairman of Thamel Tourism Development Council, has been monitoring every two months in collaboration with District Security Council and local bodies during his tenure, but he claimed that such monitoring is less now.

Kathmandu Valley Police Office Senior Superintendent of Police Vinod Ghimire informed that the police administration is trying to solve the problems by providing security to businesses operating in Thamel and Darbarmarg areas at night and collecting complaints to give peace to the locals. "In terms of peace and security in this area, it is satisfactory," he said.

Senior Superintendent of Police Ghimire said that even though there is no criminal activity, complaints are received over the phone that the people who walk in Boto at night make noise. "We have deployed more manpower in Thamel and Darbarmarg circles from the point of view of security," he said. At such a time, we have been immediately investigating and taking action against the fraudsters.' According to the code of ethics for night-time Thamel and Darbarmarg tourism business determined by the

council, businessmen who provide services with entertainment after 10:00 pm must have sound control arrangements, arrangements should be made to transport customers who are unconscious due to excessive alcohol consumption to their homes and make them stay safely, there should be uniformity in the business price list of all businessmen. , customers should be given a VAT bill, businessmen who open at night must have toilet arrangements and security guards, and all businessmen should come under the scope of tax.

Similarly, it is mentioned that artists should perform singing and dancing that reflect originality and culture. It has been mentioned that the code of conduct should be displayed in the dance bar and the place where there is no obscenity.

General Secretary of Thamel Tourism Development Council, Badri Timalsina, said that the hoteliers and customers have not adopted the code of conduct. He informed that the council is conducting periodic monitoring and deploying police to tighten security. We are practicing to fully implement the code of conduct. We request the businessmen to comply with the points mentioned in the code of conduct,' he said.
