800 Nepali students are returning home from Bangladesh: Ministry of Foreign Affairs

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, about 800 Nepali students are returning home from Bangladesh. The ministry informed through social media on Saturday that the students are coming to Nepal by air or land.

The ministry also mentioned that the Nepalese Embassy in Dhaka is coordinating the students from different places in Bangladesh to Dhaka airport and other border crossings for safe travel. 

'We have been coordinating closely with Bangladeshi universities, relevant bodies and law enforcement agencies,' Foreign Minister Arju Deuba Rana said, 'The Nepalese government is committed to ensuring the safety of all Nepali students.'

In Bangladesh, the government has rescued the Nepali students who are there after the protests against the reservation and quota system in government jobs intensified.

In protest against the reservation and quota system in government jobs, the protest started violent in Bangladesh a week ago and at least 100 people have lost their lives so far, according to various international news media. Also, it is reported that hundreds of people were injured in the exhibitions in different parts of Bangladesh. According to the BBC, the government has imposed a nationwide curfew from Friday night. Likewise, communication services, internet and telephone services have been disconnected.

Meanwhile, , the ministry issued a notification on Saturday and said that a 'help desk' has been arranged with necessary contact persons for the convenience of the students there. The ministry has requested students and parents and relatives who are in trouble to contact the email or phone number determined by the ministry and fill the online form for necessary information, support and facilitation. 

It is requested to contact Second Secretary Planning Bamjan and Rhea Chhetri at the Nepali Embassy Dhaka and Branch Officer Maheshwaramani Tripathi for contact at the Ministry at Singha Darbar. In addition to that, it is also mentioned in the notification that they are requested to inform the ministry of the name and address of the university, college or educational institution they are studying in, in case they may need assistance again in the future.
