A year has passed since 40-year-old Lalita Tharu of Banke's Kohalpur Municipality-6 Razhena started running in search of justice for her daughter who was murdered after being raped. In the meantime, she has reached the capital from the police administration to the court of justice, from the search policy to gather information about the accused person. This same Lalita is on a sit-in at Maitighar Mandla in Kathmandu on May 24 to seek justice for her daughter.
She did not rush to Kathmandu. Before going to Kathmandu on May 23, she said that she went to Kathmandu to seek justice after she staged a dharna in front of the Banke district administration office for a week but her voice was not heard. The
incident is on May 28 last year. At that time, Lalita's daughter, 22-year-old Sumdarani Tharu, was found dead in a dera at Shraddhanagar in Nepalgunj. The day after the incident, the victim's family filed a complaint against 26-year-old Shailendra Tharu of Bardia Rajapur Municipality-8 Koili village in the case of rape and dutiful killing.
Sumdarani had been living in Nepalgunj with a tent for two years. For the last one year, his brother Niren was also living with him . The Lalita couple from a poor family had a dream to educate their children even though they did not study. After completing 18 months of software engineering, Sumdarani was learning computers while brother Niren passed his class 12 exams and went home. According to Lalitha, the accused Shailendra was Niren's friend . "He liked his daughter, but his daughter didn't like him, that's why the incident happened," said his mother. He claims that Sumdarani was alone in the dera when Niren went home and killed her.
After Sumdarani, who was talking at home daily, did not call on May 28 of last year, the family started looking for her . When the family contacted them on phone, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger, there was no news, so the next morning, Sumdarani's brother and family arrived at the Dera . The lock was hanging on the door of the tent. Dhan one key used to be carried by the brother . So he opened the door with that key. Sumdarani was found dead inside the room.
According to Muchul, the deceased's neck and left finger were cut. Police found a knife at the scene. While the police were collecting bail, the victim's family said that Shailendra was in love with Sumdarani and had proposed marriage. According to the police, Shailendra reached Sumdarani's house the day before the incident and returned to Nepalgunj asking for her citizenship saying that she would get a job in the pharmacy of Bheri Hospital.
After investigation by the police, the District Court Banke allowed the arrest of Shailendra on 01 June 2008. But even after a year of the incident, the police have not been able to arrest Shailendra. "My sister was killed by a weapon, but we are not heard anywhere." Our voice has been suppressed," Niren Tharu, the brother of the deceased, told Kantipur, "My sister was robbed of her honor and killed, but the police are not showing caution to arrest the culprit. When they go to the district for questioning, the police return with abuse.
Bhai Niren said that they are under mental pressure with grief after the death of their sister. He said that even in the village, the victim's family is treated like a criminal. They question my sister's character. They insult parents," he said, "The police only give assurances saying that they are looking for a criminal for a year." Lalita also said that she only got assurances.
"Even if it takes 10/15 years, they say they will arrest me, I will not live until then, my only demand is that I want justice," Lalitha, who has been sitting in Maitighar Mandla for 7 days, pleaded. After the police failed to arrest the accused as he was absconding, the victim's family went to Rajapur's house in search of the accused for 6 months after the incident. 'Going there (accused's house) once in a reserve vehicle costs 8,000, we went many times, a lot of money was spent,' Anita Tharu, the representative of the deceased, said that the accused was driven away from there. People have been running away.'
District Police Office spokesperson DSP Narayan Dangi said that the allegation that the police did not want to arrest the accused is baseless. He stated that he could not arrest the accused because he is not in Nepal and said, 'He is understood to be in India, now we are working to understand his location.'
Sumdarani's mother Lalita along with Maiju Sangeeta Chaudhary are on sit-in in Kathmandu seeking justice. The team of 14 people who came from Nepalgunj to Kathmandu under the leadership of activist Ruvi Khan are now sitting on a dharna demanding the arrest of the accused of murdering Sumdarani as soon as possible, the kidnapping of Nirmala Kurmi and action against the culprits of the murder.
