The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal is going to take action against Vijay Lama, a contract pilot working in the Nepal Airlines Corporation, stating that he has repeatedly repeated prohibited activities for flight and passenger safety.
On May 21, the corporation was instructed not to fly the aircraft and grounded two pilots along with Lama on the charge of taking video/photographs in the sensitive area designated by the Authority. In the charge of non-compliance with the standards and recommendations determined by the International Civil Aviation Organization and the Authority, the Authority formed a three-member investigation committee under the coordination of Director of the Aviation Safety Department, Vikramraj Gautam. According to an official attached to the committee, out of the two grounded Captain Bhavna Giri was released (returned to the flight) after it was found that no action was required. The charges against pilot Giri were not confirmed. "It has been decided to release him," said another officer of the authority, "but pilot Vijay Lama was found to have repeatedly violated the requirements, directives, manuals and circulars issued by the authority."
According to the official, the investigation committee found that the pilot Lama was taking videos/photographs in the cockpit and other sensitive areas of the ship while it was moving, taking off, and posting it on social media. "Even before this, he had been warned many times and released on this charge," said a source involved in the investigation, "but this time there is no way to release him." According to section (25) of the Civil Aviation Authority Act 2053, action is being taken up to 25 thousand rupees.'
The authority has prohibited the taking of photos/videography by the crew members on the runway or landing during take-off, stating that it is extremely risky. About this, the authority has been issuing circulars from time to time to all airlines flying in Nepal.
Lama, a pilot who retired from the corporation three years ago at the age of 58, is currently working in the corporation on contract service in widebody aircraft. There are 18 pilots for the two widebody aircraft with the corporation.
