The government has sent a diplomatic letter to Nepal to extradite Gitendrababu (GB) Rai, president of Gorkha Media Network, who is believed to be hiding in Malaysia. He has been on the run ever since the case was registered on charges of misappropriation of funds of half a dozen savings and loan cooperatives across the country, including Pokhara-based Suryadarshan.

Based on the fact that Rai, who is on the wanted list of Interpol, the world's common police organization, is hiding in Malaysia, the government has started a diplomatic initiative to return him to the country.

At the request of Nepal Police, Rai was listed as a fugitive and Interpol issued a diffusion on January 12 and a red notice on January 29. According to Ministry of Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs sources, the process to bring Rai back has been going on for 2 weeks. Officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs refused to speak formally about the diplomatic initiative. "After Interpol issued a diffusion and red notice against Rai, it has been confirmed that he is hiding in Malaysia," a government official familiar with the matter told Kantipur. "Because there is no extradition treaty between the two countries, only this issue will be addressed, and if the Nepal government sends a diplomatic letter, it has been done accordingly after Malaysia promised to help send back the accused who are hiding in their country," he said.

Farrar Rai is the founder president of Suryadarshan Cooperative. A cooperative fraud case filed on October 18, 2080 against 19 people including Rai for embezzling more than 1 billion rupees from Suryadarshan Cooperative's savers is pending in the Kaski District Court. Only 5 of the defendants in the case have been arrested and are currently in jail pending trial. 14 people are still absconding with Rai.

Rai has been accused of embezzling the savings of thousands of common people from Sahara in Chitwan along with Suryadarshan, Sano Paila in Birganj in Parsa, Supreme in Butwal in Rupandehi, Samana in Nepalgunj in Banke and Swarnalakshmi Cooperative in Kathmandu. Among them, only the crime related to embezzlement of Suryadarshan has been investigated and a case has been filed in the court against the defendant along with Rai. The police is continuing the investigation into the embezzlement case involving Rai.

14 defendants including Rai of Suryadarshan and most of the current and former officers/directors and employees of other cooperatives are absconding as the police continue the investigation. Although some of those who were arrested stated that they worked on Rai's plan, since the main accused Rai was not arrested, those involved in embezzlement have not been able to come under the law. An arrest warrant was granted on October 7. It is believed that Rai may have fled to Malaysia after receiving the needle, which is under investigation.
