Metropolitan police have started appearing on the streets amid complaints that the city police are not present on the streets of the Kathmandu Valley and that unorganized parking and footpath trading have created chaos in the metropolitan area.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City has fully mobilized the Metropolitan Police in the field, informed Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and Chief of the Metropolitan Police Force Bishnu Prasad Joshi. He also mentioned that the Metropolitan Police are currently on regular duty in areas including New Road.
Ganesh Nepali died during treatment after attempting self-immolation last Thursday after a dispute with the Metropolitan Police over the wheel lock on his motorcycle in front of the Passport Department in Tripureshwor. After Nepali's death, the metropolitan area was seen to be in chaos due to the lack of presence of the Metropolitan Police on the roads and problems such as unorganized parking and trading on the sidewalks.
'We have regularly deployed the Metropolitan Police, except for the Reserve Force, on duty,' Joshi said, 'We have now regularly mobilized the Metropolitan Police in the field.'
He also informed that the Metropolitan Police has been kept on high alert as the risk of disasters including floods and inundation may increase with the rains.
