Kathmandu Metropolitan City is set to organize an international film festival in Kathmandu. On Sunday, Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol, while presenting the policy and program for the fiscal year 2083/084, said that the original and unique historical and cultural heritages within the Kathmandu Metropolitan Region will be protected, promoted and developed to embody the vision of 'Cultural City: Prosperous Metropolis'.
The policy and program states, 'An international-level Kathmandu Film Festival will be organized by inviting foreign guests.' For the preservation, transmission and revival of original and traditional skills, arts and knowledge, private and institutional buildings of historical, archaeological, cultural and architectural importance will be reconstructed and heritage settlements will be protected.'
The Metropolitan City will also encourage the construction of heritage-friendly building facades along the routes of other historical and cultural festivals, including the Indrajatra and Seto Machindranath (Arya Avalokiteshwar) Jatra. ‘For the promotion and development of tourism, homestays will be encouraged in ancient settlements and cities,’ the policy and program states. ‘Necessary initiatives will be taken to protect and promote intangible heritage such as local festivals, festivals, art, culture, dishes, traditional instruments and music and list them in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.’
The Metropolitan City has also emphasized the restoration of ponds and stone streams (hitis) within the metropolitan area, the collection and replenishment of rainwater, and the preservation of water resources to maintain environmental balance.
