Kathmandu Metropolitan City has ordered the evacuation of squatter settlements by Saturday. According to Metropolitan City Spokesperson Navin Manandhar, residents including Thapathali, who have been encroaching on government land, are being asked to voluntarily leave the settlements.
Spokesperson Manandhar said that the time has been given until Saturday to evacuate the settlements in coordination with the Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force. 'We have now given the final notice through the evacuation,' he said, 'if they do not move within the specified time, there may be a situation where they have to be removed by force.'
He said that the metropolis will also provide transportation assistance to interested families to move to alternative places.
After Sudan Gurung resigned from the post of Home Minister, the responsibility of the Home Ministry has come under the Prime Minister. After that, Prime Minister Balendra Shah called the chiefs of the security agencies and gave instructions on the management of squatter settlements.
The metropolis, however, stated that it has taken this as a continuous campaign of city management. 'All parties are in agreement on the issue of creating an orderly Kathmandu,' said spokesperson Manandhar, 'This time the work is progressing, it should be taken positively. We had given enough time before. If we do not move at this time, force will be used.'
