Kathmandu Metropolitan City is going to run night buses in Kathmandu from the coming New Year. The metropolis, in collaboration with Sajha Yatayat, is going to operate night public transport from 1st Baisakh 2083.
There will be a route via Lalitpur's Lagankhel, Patan Hospital, Alka, Norvic, Maternity Home, Trauma Center, Bir Hospital, Kanti Hospital, Teaching Hospital, Gangalal Heart Center to Budhanilkantha. This is a 16-kilometer one-way route from north to south.
Similarly, another route has been established from Thankot to the International Airport via Satungal, Kalanki, Kalimati, Tripureshwor, Thapathali, Maitighar Mandal, Baneshwor, Minbhavan, Tinkune. The distance of this route is 20 kilometers. The metropolis has stated that 4 night electric buses will be operated on these two routes.
‘We are starting night public transport services as it is necessary to improve the existing situation of expensive travel due to the lack of public transport after 8 pm,’ said Acting Chief of the Metropolitan City Sunita Dangol, ‘Everyone is facing problems due to the lack of public transport and its alternatives. In particular, teenage girls and women have to face abuse. Students are suffering a lot financially. We are starting to provide services to improve this situation.’
The Metropolitan City has stated that these buses will run from 8 pm to 11 pm. They will arrive at the bus stops on the designated routes every 20 minutes. Acting Chief Dangol also informed that CCTV cameras will be installed on the buses and the city police will be deployed for security.
