Kathmandu Metropolitan City has signed an agreement with Bir Hospital for free screening and initial treatment of breast and cervical cancer in women.

The agreement was signed between Health Department Chief Deepak Kumar KC and Hospital Director Prof. Dr. Dilip Sharma in the presence of Metropolitan City Acting Chief Sunita Dangol and Chief Administrative Officer Saroj Guragain. The metropolis has stated that the program is being implemented to control cancer as it is seen as a major problem among non-communicable diseases.

Acting Chief Dangol had directed to arrange a schedule so that women and housewives associated with various professions can easily get tested. She said, ‘The service should be made simple, easy and accessible. Make special arrangements for women with disabilities,’ she said, ‘Regular screening is one of the ways to prevent cancer. Please provide adequate information about the misconceptions and difficulties in this regard. Please make arrangements to expand the access of all women to the test.’

During that, the hospital director, Prof. Dr. Sharma, said that he planned to make the program more effective this year based on last year’s learning. He said, ‘We will try to provide high-quality services. I have not shown any symptoms. The mentality of why get tested is making the situation worse,’ he said, ‘To improve this deteriorating situation, we need to get tested even if there are no symptoms.’

According to KC, the head of the Health Department, women in the age group of 30 to 60 years, women who were exempted during the test conducted last year, and women who tested positive during the test last year should be the target group for testing and initial treatment. The test will start from Chaitra 16. He said that the plan will be implemented to test 100 to 120 people every day.

According to Chandra Bhatta, the focal person of the program, before going for the test, you will have to go to the nearest health promotion center and record your details. Also, after recording your details in this way, you will receive a referral slip from the center. You have to go to the hospital on the date and time mentioned in this slip.

According to the metropolitan city, a clinical examination of the woman's breasts is performed during the test. If there is any doubt during the initial examination, an ultrasound is performed. After this, she is sent for mammography. HPV DNA PCR (Human Papilloma Virus) test is performed in the cervical cancer test. If the report is positive, colposcopy and biopsy will be performed, it has been stated.
