A demonstration was held in Kathmandu on Wednesday to protest the systemic misuse and unconstitutional encroachment of the proportional inclusive electoral system.
The Indigenous Gen-G Collective held a peaceful protest in front of the Federal Parliament building in New Baneshwor on Wednesday afternoon. The participants in the protest carried placards and banners with slogans such as 'Implement the inclusive proportional representation system ensured by the constitution', 'Stop occupying the seats reserved for the oppressed, marginalized, and minorities', 'Implement the inclusive, proportional system immediately, stop giving space to your neighbors in the name of inclusive proportional representation,' and others.
They say that proportional representation is not a political gift but a binding constitutional obligation based on equality, inclusion, restorative justice, and real democracy.
Although Articles 42(1), 84(2) and 176(6) of the Constitution of Nepal ensure the meaningful participation of women, indigenous peoples, Dalits, Madhesis, Tharus, Muslims, Khas Aryas, persons with disabilities, sexual and gender minorities and other marginalized communities in all state structures, the Collective claims that the recently published proportional candidate lists by political parties violate these constitutional provisions.
The Collective believes that the proportional list published for the upcoming February 21 House of Representatives elections prioritizes political, family and economic elites and systematically excludes grassroots voices.
The Indigenous Gen-G Collective has demanded that the criteria and process adopted in preparing the proportional list be made public, that parties and individuals who violate the constitution be held accountable and that the most marginalized communities be ensured fair participation.
