Local residents protested on Wednesday against the Supreme Court's decision to maintain an additional 20 meters of space along the banks of rivers and streams in the Kathmandu Valley and the Kathmandu Metropolitan City's notification.
In 2065 BS, the government had set standards of 20 meters in the Bagmati, Bishnumati and Manohara rivers, 9 meters in Dhobi Khola, 12 meters in Nakkhu and 4-10 meters in other rivers. Accordingly, many had abandoned their land and built houses.
In the judgment of the joint bench of Supreme Court Justices Anand Mohan Bhattarai and Binod Sharma on 2080 Paush 3, it has been said that an additional 20 meters should be kept free in the existing open area in the Bagmati and its tributaries and that settlements built by encroaching on government land on the banks of the river should be removed.
The Sangharsh Samiti estimates that this will affect more than 84,000 households in 19 rivers in the valley. On 17 Paush, those affected by the court's decision also demonstrated in Kathmandu.
