Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport and Urban Development Kulman Ghising has urged Helambu Rural Municipality to take necessary initiatives to remove the obstacles in the source area of ​​the Melamchi Drinking Water Project.

After the project-affected people blocked the source and stopped bringing drinking water to the Kathmandu Valley, Minister Ghising on Monday urged Helambu Rural Municipality Chairperson Nima Gyaljen Sherpa to take necessary initiatives and support to resolve the problem.

Prime Minister Sushila Karki had on Monday directed to resolve the problem seen in Melamchi drinking water. Currently, Prime Minister Karki is handling the responsibility of the Ministry of Drinking Water.

Stating that the government is ready to resolve the agreements made in the past and the current demands through talks and discussions, Minister Ghising had urged the government to be serious about the problem as the drinking water problem has started to appear in the Kathmandu Valley due to the cessation of water supply from Melamchi. He said that the government is working to resolve the problem and bring drinking water to the Kathmandu Valley as soon as possible.

Helambu Rural Municipality Chairperson Sherpa said that the government should implement the agreements made in the past. He said that the land and house rent taken by the project, the amount due to the supplier of goods of the previous construction contractor CMC should be paid, the road from Melamchi Bazaar to Melamchi Ghayang should be constructed, and 25 percent of the sale price of Kathmandu Valley Drinking Water Ltd. based on the amount of water received in Sundarijal after the diversion from the Melamchi River should be provided for the development of Helambu Rural Municipality.

An agreement was reached with the then Minister of Water Supply on 21 Asoj 2081 between the Melamchi Drinking Water Flood Victims Struggle Committee, Helambu Rural Municipality, and representatives of political parties active in the rural municipality.
