The Traffic Police in the Kathmandu Valley has launched a special campaign against drug abuse (MAPSE).

In the past years, alcohol consumption has been considered the main cause of traffic accidents during festivals in the Kathmandu Valley, so this year the traffic police have adopted special vigilance. Under the direction of the Chief of the Kathmandu Valley Police Office Ranipokhari and Additional Inspector General of Police Dan Bahadur Karki, the district and traffic police are strictly monitoring the traffic by conducting alcohol tests at the main squares, roads and alleys of the Kathmandu Valley from this morning till night.

He said that the district and traffic police have been deployed on the roads throughout the day as per the police's expectation that the festival will be safe, dignified and disciplined.

The Chief of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police and Senior Superintendent of Police Nawaraj Adhikari has himself been deployed in the campaign. He and his team had conducted alcohol tests on the drivers in Tripureshwor, Naya Baneshwor, Kalanki, Durbarmarg, Maharajgunj, Gaushala, Chabahil, Balkhu and other areas.

On the day of Bhai Tika, Senior Superintendent of Police Adhikari said that hundreds of drivers were tested across the Kathmandu Valley to determine whether they were driving under the influence of alcohol or not.

The traffic police have taken stricter measures this year than last year to prevent the trend of drunk driving during festivals like Dashain and Tihar. At various places in the valley, the traffic police had distributed awareness pamphlets and conducted miking among road users with the slogan 'Let's drive without drinking, let's support everyone in a safe journey'.
