The central office of the Guthi Institute has said that preparations for Indrajatra, the main pilgrimage of Kathmandu Valley, have been completed. On Thursday morning at 10:31 AM, the Jatra starts formally after raising the yasin (lingo) decorated with flags. In the 8-day Jatra, Kumari, Ganesha and Bhairav Rath Yatra starts on 21st of Bhadra.

According to the Guthi Sansthan, arrangements have been made for the necessary ropes, lakasi, chukul as well as home chanting materials for Indradhvajotthan. Preparations have been completed for the reception of high officials of foreign diplomatic missions including the President, Prime Minister, and Ministers who are coming to observe the Jatra.

It is customary for the head of state to attend the gaddi meeting of Hanumandhoka during the Jatra and observe the Jatra after worshiping Ganesha, Bhairav and Kumari. Shailesharaj Kuwar, chief administrator of Guthi Sansthan, said that discussions have been held with the stakeholders including priests, Guthiyars, Rakmi, Kumari, Ganesh, Bhairav's parents, security agency chiefs who will participate in the Jatra.

'We have arranged the necessary materials for the Jogichakra Puja and Nath Yogi Puja, which is done so that there are no obstacles in the Jatra,' he said, 'We have made arrangements for the people who walk along with the chariot and the necessary materials for repairs, keeping in mind the obstacles that may come to the chariot during the chariot journey, such as the fall of gujar, wood breaking.' The chariots of Kumari, Ganesha and Bhairav have been repaired. Arrangements have been made for the bouquets and garlands needed to decorate the three chariots," he said.

During the Jatra, the statue of Akash Bhairav, which is believed to be the head of Kirati King Yalambar of Asan Chowk, is brought outside the temple and decorated. Lakhe dance, Pulukisi dance symbolizing Indra's vehicle Airavata elephant, Dasavatar dance in the Trailokya Narayan temple in front of the Kumari house and Devi dance are performed in various doubles.

It is customary to feed the common man Hathu Hykegu in the form of black jad prasad through a tube attached to the mouth of Shwet Bhairav. On the last day, all the three chariots of Ganesha, Bhairav and Kumari are made to circumambulate Kilagal as Nanicha Yah. On the same day, on the 26th of Bhadra, at 10:00 pm and 32:00 pm, the Jatra is being concluded with the fall of the Indra flag.

Indra Jatra is also described in Sanatan Dharmasahitya and Valmiki's Ramayana, Mahabharata, Kalika Purana, Devi Purana, Vishnu Dharmottara Purana, Harivamsa Purana, Bhavishi Purana. According to the myth, Indra, the king of heaven, came to Kathmandu valley in search of Parijat flowers, which his mother Vasundharadevi needed for daily worship. When he tried to pluck the Parijat flower from the garden without asking, the locals called Indra a thief and tied him up. Later, there was a commotion in heaven that Indra had disappeared.

It is believed that Basundhara himself came to Kathmandu to release his son Indra from that bond after seeing Indra bound by the people of Kathmandu.

It is believed that the tradition of presence of the head of state in Indrajatra dates back to the time of Jayaprakash Malla. It is said that Jayaprakash Malla, the last Malla king of Kantipur, used to circumambulate the city sitting on his own chariot in the Chariot Jatra of the living Goddess Kumari.
