After flooding in the river, bringing water from Melamchi's spring to the valley has been stopped. According to the Melamchi Water Development Committee, water supply to the valley has been stopped since 3rd of June due to flooding in the river.
With the beginning of Barkhayam, the water of the Melamchi river is collected and sent through a tunnel to the Riberma river near the spring to supply the valley residents regularly and water is distributed in the valley.
Ratna Lamichhane, Executive Director of Melamchi Water Supply Development Committee, said that in view of the lack of drinking water in the valley, 5 to 70 million liters of water has been brought to Kathmandu from Riberma River. He says that the water from Melamchi will be difficult to bring to Kathmandu during the rainy season. "Flooding has also started in the river, so that there is no damage to the project, the water has to be shut off," he said.
Melamchi Water Supply Development Committee spokesperson Rajendra Pant said that the water of Melamchi was brought to Riberma River and sent to the distribution system. "The dam area is near, the water from there is brought directly to the tunnel and brought to Kathmandu," he said. He said that until the headworks of the Melamchi project are built, water from Riberma river will be mixed with it and brought to Kathmandu and distributed.
Now 20 million liters of water is coming from Melamchi every day . Lamichhane, the Executive Director of Melamchi Water Supply Development Committee, said that preparations are being made to bring about 140 million liters of water from Riberma River and 5 to 70 million liters of Bagmati River to Kathmandu this year during the rainy season.
There is a daily demand of 470 million liters of water in Kathmandu Valley. According to the Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Limited (KUKL), the water has not been distributed according to the demand.
