Chairman of Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Center) Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that he will take the initiative to bring domestic workers to the minimum wage by making a law.
Addressing the National Policy Dialogue on 'Domestic Labor and Informal Care Work' organized by Yuvalaya Sanstha today in Lalitpur, Chairman Dahal, who is also the former Prime Minister, said that as an opposition party, he bears the moral responsibility of raising the issue of labor in Parliament.
'As the work of making laws according to the essence and spirit of the constitution is not timely, the issue of workers has not progressed properly, we will take initiatives to bring domestic workers to the minimum wage of workers,' he said.
Dahal is of the opinion that the rationale and sustainability of the change cannot be maintained unless positive changes can be made in the lives of the workers. "I was able to become the prime minister three times because of the workers. I want to thank you for emphasizing this issue and trying to take the initiative nationally. I want to make a commitment to continue to create an environment for domestic workers to lead a dignified life by creating laws through the legal system," he said.
MP Rama Koirala has said that she is representing the trade union and is constantly raising her voice for the welfare of the workers. She mentioned that many jobs can be created in the country and said that the government does not recognize the labor market and jobs in Nepal.
Vice President of the National Youth Council, Surendra Basnet, has said that it is necessary to make a law for the benefit of domestic workers and implement it effectively.
Yuvalaya, a youth-led organization established in 2013, has been active in the areas of youth empowerment, rights protection and social transformation. Dharmaraj Rimal, the president of the organization, informed that in recent times, they have been advocating and campaigning at the local, state and federal levels to give social recognition to domestic and care-related labor and develop it as a respectable and dignified profession.
