Senior journalist Mathwar Singh Basnet passed away. He died this morning of a heart attack at the age of 79. Basnet, a resident of Bhaktapur's Suryavinayak Municipality-8, was admitted to Annapurna Neuro Hospital in Kathmandu after suffering a heart attack at home on Thursday night.

He passed away while being treated on a ventilator. According to Sushil Basnet, secretary of Nepali Congress Bhaktapur, he will be cremated today at Aryaghat in Pashupati. Basnet is the founding editor of

Purnajagran weekly and is also the former president of National News Committee (RASS) and Gorkhapatra Institute and Press Council of Nepal. Being close to Ganeshman Singh and involved in politics for a long time, he was also the president of Ganeshman Singh Smriti Batika.

Basnet, who has recently been active in Nepali Congress Bhaktapur politics, entered politics since 2017. During the movement for the establishment of democracy in the country, Basnet was sentenced to life imprisonment.

He was released from prison in 2046 after gaining democracy. Basnet has a wife, a son and a daughter.
