Sunita Dangol, Deputy Chief of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, has demanded to celebrate the day Gautama Buddha announced the cessation of life rituals 3 months before he attained nirvana (announcement of death) as a national festival.
Shrikhand Tarumul Mahavihar, Sikhumubaha: She made this demand while addressing the program organized by Basantapur on the occasion of 'Lord Buddha's Ayu Sanskar Paryatig Diwas' organized by Basantapur on Wednesday. "Magha Purnima (Sillapunhi) is the day Lord Gautama Buddha attained Nirvana," she said. It is customary to celebrate Vaishakh Shukla Purnima on the day of his attainment of Nirvana (death) and enlightenment. However, many people are not aware of the day when he announced that I will attain Nirvana after exactly three months.'
She also said that Kathmandu Metropolitan City is ready to help from its place to show the importance of that day. "Many countries of the world that follow Buddhism have been taking this day as a special importance," she said, "However, in Nepal, the birthplace of Buddha, we are not even able to inform many people about it. Showing the importance of that thing, we have started celebrating openly.'
She also emphasized on the day of Maghapurnima (Sillapunhi) that Buddha's Day should be celebrated at the national level every year. In the
program, Kundannya Mahasthavir said that he preached for 45 years and reminded Gautama Buddha that he should choose peace and not war. Member of National Assembly Anjan Shakya, Member of Parliament Virajbhakta Shrestha, former Minister of Bagmati Province Ajaykranti Shakya, President of Neva De Daboo, Pavitra Bajracharya and others were also present. Gautama Buddha renounced his home at the age of 29 and attained Sambodhi at the age of 35 on the night of Baisakh Purnima. Buddha, who was born in Lumbini on the day of Baisakh Purnima 2500 years ago, at the age of 80, attained Mahaparinirvana easily on the day of Baisakh Purnima.
