Himalayan Bank Chairman Prachanda Bahadur Shrestha has been unanimously elected as the Chairman of the Confederation of Banks and Financial Institutions, Nepal (CBFIN).

The leadership of CBFIN was also vacant after the current chairman Upendra Paudyal stepped down as the chairman of Nabil Bank.

The general meeting of Nabil Bank held in the last week of December has elected Nirvan Chaudhary as the chairman of the board of directors. Accordingly, the post of chairman of the committee was vacant. According to the statute of CBFIN, the position of the office bearer or member of the working committee automatically terminates when he leaves the board of directors of the banks and financial institutions he represents.

Shrestha was unanimously nominated for the remaining term at the 15th meeting of the working committee held on Magh 20 under the chairmanship of the acting chairman of the federation, Rajesh Upadhyay. Shrestha, who has been active in the Nepali banking sector for more than two decades, was previously the general secretary of the CBFIN working committee.

Newly appointed Chairman Shrestha, upon assuming the office of Chairman, expressed his commitment to take forward the leadership responsibility of a leading institution in Nepal's banking sector like CBFIN with trust and confidence in him and to take it forward as a driver of sustainable development of the banking sector. Expressing concern over the fact that an indispensable and sensitive sector like banking, which is the cornerstone of Nepal's economy, is becoming challenging and unsafe today, Chairman Shrestha said that the working committee will move forward by giving top priority to promoting the common interests of the banking sector, which is linked to the lives of millions of people and the future of the nation, increasing public trust and confidence in the banking sector, and working hand in hand with the Government of Nepal, the Ministry of Finance, Nepal Rastra Bank and other regulatory bodies, and the entire private sector, for building a strong economy and a prosperous nation through financial stability and sustainable development.

Similarly, the 16th meeting of the working committee held on the same day under the chairmanship of newly appointed chairman Prachanda Bahadur Shrestha unanimously nominated NMB Bank Chairman Manoj Kumar Goyal as the general secretary of CBFIN and Laxmi Sunrise Bank Chairman Raman Nepal as the treasurer. The post of general secretary fell vacant with the nomination of the then general secretary Prachanda Bahadur Shrestha as the chairman, while the then chairman of NIC Asia Bank Tulsiram Agrawal had already resigned as the chairman of the bank.

According to the statute of CBFIN, if the post of the working committee officer falls vacant, it is to be nominated from among the members of the concerned group who are still in the working committee and if that is not possible, the nominations are made from among the chairmen of member banks and financial institutions.
