Doctors and health workers protesting against the vandalism and assault on doctors that took place last Saturday at Narayani Hospital in Birgunj continued their demonstrations on Monday as well. They have demanded strict action against the perpetrators and a safe working environment in the hospital.
Doctors and health workers at Narayani Hospital, who have been on strike since Sunday by shutting down all medical services including emergency care, gathered at Ghantaghar Chowk on Monday and staged a protest with slogans. They have called on the government to end violent incidents in health institutions, ensure the safety of doctors, and take legal action against those involved in the incident.
The emergency ward of Narayani Hospital, which is usually crowded with patients, now stands deserted. The situation is similar in other private hospitals as well. Meanwhile, Acting Medical Superintendent of Narayani Hospital, Dr. Chittaranjan Sah, issued a statement on Monday urging the District Police Office, Parsa, to identify those involved in the incident and take action according to the law.
The statement mentions that those involved in the vandalism and assault should be identified and prosecuted based on CCTV footage from the day of the incident. It also states that, following the incident, doctors and health workers have been mentally and physically traumatized, resulting in the disruption of all medical services, including emergency care.
At the call of the Nepal Medical Association, doctors from private hospitals in Birgunj have also joined the protest since Sunday. As a result, most services at both government and private hospitals have been affected. With the suspension of both emergency and regular medical services, patients and service seekers who came to the hospitals for treatment have faced difficulties.
Although the police detained one person on Sunday on suspicion of involvement in the incident, his identity has not been made public. Dr. Pramod Ram, a doctor at Narayani Hospital who was seriously injured in the incident, has been taken to Kathmandu for further treatment.
Dr. Udaynarayan Singh, spokesperson for Narayani Hospital, said that Chief District Officer Bhola Dahal had called the doctors for a discussion and that they would be going for talks shortly. He stated that if the CDO gives a reliable commitment to take action against those involved in the incident during the discussion, they are considering resuming emergency services while keeping other services suspended.
On Saturday morning, 45-year-old Rajkumar Patel, a resident of Birgunj Metropolitan City–25, was brought to the emergency ward of Narayani Hospital in critical condition. He died during treatment after experiencing chest problems, prompting enraged relatives and locals to vandalize the emergency ward and brutally assault Dr. Pramod Ram, who was on duty. Following this incident, the doctors launched their protest.
