The main road expansion of the Birgunj Metropolitan City area is set to resume from Wednesday. Durga Prasad, engineer of the Road Division Office, Hetauda and focal person designated for Birgunj, said that the team had reached Birgunj on Tuesday to start the work from Wednesday. He said that the expansion campaign is planned to start at around 12 noon after discussing with the stakeholders on Wednesday morning. The same number of dozers (half a dozen) will be used in the campaign. Earlier, the office team had carried out road expansion work till last Wednesday. The work was suspended in Birgunj last Thursday due to the Gahwamai Rath Yatra and extreme heat. In the first phase, the Road Department had used dozers on about 1,200 houses and buildings in the main road area on 6 and 7 Baisakh. In the process, the front parts of most of the structures were demolished. Although the concerned parties were urged to remove the structures within the road boundary within 25 days, many of the structures remained intact even after the deadline expired, so the department started the second phase of the campaign two weeks ago.
The office has stated that about 125 buildings and structures have been demolished from the North Gandak and South Miteri Bridges under the second phase so far. Most of the structures on the east side of the Tribhuvan Highway have now been removed.
