The Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry has demanded that the Jitpur Simara Sub-metropolitan City immediately stop such activities and refund the amount collected from industrialists and businessmen, saying that it is collecting taxes and fees under various headings against the law. The association made this demand in a letter to the Jitpur Simara Sub-metropolitan City on Tuesday. In a letter sent to the Minister of Federal Affairs and General Administration, the Minister of Finance, and the Chief District Officers of Parsa and Bara, it stated that the collection of taxes against the Constitution, the Local Government Operation Act, and the orders of the Supreme Court has placed an additional financial burden on the private sector. According to Hari Prasad Gautam, president of the association who signed the letter, some local levels have been collecting money from industrialists and businessmen under business tax, service fee, sanitation fee, recommendation fee, infrastructure usage fee, various fees related to export and transportation, entry fee, market management fee, and other local headings. The association claims that many of these taxes and fees do not have a clear legal basis and that a situation of double taxation has been created in some of them.

The association has stated that it is against the spirit of the constitution to collect money from the local level under new headings when the same industry or business is paying taxes separately to the federal, provincial and local governments. The association says that this has increased the production cost of the industry and has also negatively affected export competitiveness.
