The main road expansion in the Birgunj Metropolitan City area has been halted for a few days. According to Durga Prasad, engineer of the Road Division, Hetauda and focal person designated for Birgunj, some high-rise buildings in the area between Makalu Hotel and Birta Mandir have been demolished by 2 pm on Wednesday.
He said that priority has been given to cleaning drains and sidewalks on Wednesday as well and 2-3 of the office's teams are continuously being mobilized for that work. Prasad informed that the road expansion has been halted for a few days from Thursday. 'There is a Gahwamai Rath Yatra in Birgunj on Thursday.' Similarly, most of our employees have fallen ill due to continuous work and heat and humidity,' he said, 'We will return to work from 2nd or 3rd of Shrawan.'
On 6th and 7th Baisakh, the Road Department had used dozers on about 1,200 houses and buildings in the main road area in the first phase. In that process, the front part of most of the structures was demolished, while the concerned were urged to remove the structures located in the road boundary area within 25 days. But after many structures remained intact even after the deadline, the department launched the second phase of the campaign a week and a half ago. During this period, the office has demolished about 125 buildings and structures from the North Gandak and South Miteri Bridge sides.
Currently, only the structures on the east side of the Tribhuvan Highway are being demolished. The dozer has not been used on the west side so far.
