– Around 300 houses have been demolished within a week of starting road expansion work in the main road area of Birgunj Metropolitan City.
Engineer at the Road Division Hetauda and focal person assigned for Birgunj, Durga Prasad, informed that this number of buildings has been demolished from Gandak to Ghantaghar and from Miteri Bridge to the building of the Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
He said that the six bulldozers currently deployed are demolishing 50 to 60 houses daily. Out of the total 8 kilometers of road area where houses need to be demolished, about 6 kilometers have already been cleared, he said.
He added that the demolition work on the remaining 2 kilometers of road area will also continue gradually. He said that since some homeowners in the remaining market area are removing their own structures, the work in this area will not be as difficult.
From last Friday to Wednesday, bulldozers were operated from Gandak to Ghantaghar, and from Thursday to Friday, bulldozers began operating north from Miteri Bridge. On Baisakh 6 and 7, the Department of Roads had operated bulldozers on about 1,200 houses and buildings in the main road area in the first phase.
During that process, the front portions of most structures were demolished, and those with structures within the road boundary were requested to remove them themselves within 25 days. However, as many structures remained even after the deadline, the department launched the second phase of the campaign from last Friday.
