In the past six days, the Department of Roads has used bulldozers on one hundred building structures during the main road expansion of Birgunj Metropolitan City.
Having started removing building structures on Friday, the work reached up to the Nepal Army barracks near Ghantaghar by Wednesday. Engineer Durga Prasad from the Hetaunda Road Division, who has been designated as the focal person for Birgunj, informed that about 100 building structures within the road standards have already been removed by bulldozers.
He said that seven bulldozers were operated simultaneously on Wednesday as well. He stated that the work has gained momentum due to the deployment of more bulldozers. Prasad explained that, since the road narrows and there are electric poles when entering the main market area from the barracks southward via Ghantaghar, there are plans to start work from the Miteri Bridge side from Thursday.
He said that, moving southward from Ghantaghar, many people would face problems as the electric pole lines would need to be cut, so that has not been done. He further stated that, after coordinating with the Nepal Electricity Authority Birgunj Distribution Center, the obstacles south of Ghantaghar would be removed after the end of the fiscal year.
He said that a meeting of stakeholders was held on Wednesday evening in the office of Bhola Dahal, Chief District Officer of Parsa.
On the 6th and 7th of Baisakh, the Department of Roads had used bulldozers on about 1,200 houses and buildings in the main road area in the first phase. During that process, the front parts of most structures were demolished, and the owners of structures within the road boundary were requested to remove them themselves within 25 days. However, as many structures remained even after the deadline, the department has moved forward with the second phase of the campaign.
