A police constable was seriously injured in Saptari Jail when his colleague fired a SLR rifle.

A round of bullets was fired from the rifle carried by police constable Ajay Kumar Mehta, 23, deployed for prison security on Wednesday night. Police constable Bishwajit Ray Yadav, 22, who was injured in the bullet, has been sent to the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan for further treatment, said prison chief Rupak Mandal. According to him, both the constables had completed their training and joined duty only two and a half weeks ago.

Bishwajit, who was posted at the Nepal Police Special Security Battalion, Dhalkebar, Dhanusha, is currently recovering. Bishwajit, who was shot in the upper part of the waist at around 10:30 pm, was rescued and admitted to Gajendra Narayan Singh Hospital, Rajbiraj. However, as his health condition appeared to be critical, he was sent to Dharan on the advice of the doctor.

DSP Hemraj Ghimire, Information Rights Officer at the District Police Office, Saptari, said that further investigation is underway into the shooting. “A bullet suddenly fired from the rifle Mehta was carrying, hit the wall and hit Yadav in the waist,” he said. “It does not appear that a direct shot was fired. Bishwajit’s health condition is normal now.”
