Among the items exported from Birgunj, the country's main trading post, refined soybean oil has remained the most exported item till mid-Jeshta of the current fiscal year. However, its export value has declined significantly compared to the previous fiscal year.

According to the data of the Birgunj Customs Office, the five major items exported by value till mid-Jeshta of the current fiscal year are refined soybean oil, fruit juice, refined sunflower oil, various types of fabrics and synthetic yarn. These items account for a large share of the total exports to third countries, including India. However, the exports of refined sunflower oil and synthetic yarn have also decreased this year.

The export of refined soybean oil, which is at the top, has decreased by about 24 percent compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year. Till the month of Jestha of the previous fiscal year, 260 million liters of refined soybean oil worth Rs 55.28 billion were exported to India through this post. During this period of the current fiscal year, 236.6 million liters of refined soybean oil worth 49.68 billion rupees have been exported.

The export of fruit juice, which is in second place, has increased the most significantly. Its export value has almost doubled, increasing by more than one billion rupees. Last year, 75.7 million liters of juice worth 7.25 billion rupees were exported. By the month of Jestha of the current fiscal year, 540 million liters of juice worth 84.78 billion rupees have been exported.

The export of refined sunflower oil, which is in third place, has decreased this year. Last year, 39 million liters of this oil worth 8.42 billion rupees were exported to India. In the current year, 81 million liters of refined sunflower oil worth 5.47 billion rupees have been exported. Thus, although the export volume of this oil has increased, there has been a significant decline in exports based on this value.

Exports of various types of textiles, which are in fourth place, have increased in both value and quantity. By the month of Jestha of last fiscal year, 85.7 million meters of textiles worth Rs 2.94 billion were exported through this border. In the current fiscal year, 87.2 million meters of textiles worth Rs 3.26 billion were exported.

Similarly, the data shows that the export of synthetic yarn, which is in fifth place, has also decreased by about 30 percent. By the month of Jestha of last year, 44.3 million meters of synthetic yarn worth Rs 5.24 billion were exported through this border. This year, only 82.18 thousand meters of synthetic yarn worth Rs 2.19 billion have been exported.

Hari Gautam, President of Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, says that despite the decrease in exports of some goods due to international market demand, availability of raw materials, production costs and business environment, it is positive that processed agricultural and industrial products maintain their dominance in the export list. He said that the data shows that Nepal's exports are still focused on limited items. He said that promotion of new products, value addition, and market diversification are necessary to sustain export growth.
