The sanitation workers of the contractor company entrusted with the sanitation management by the Birgunj Metropolitan City have started a protest since Sunday, demanding various demands including a salary increase. During the protest, they protested by piling garbage in Ghantaghar Chowk, Meena Bazaar area and in front of the main entrance of the metropolis.

After there were signs that the regular sanitation service of the city would be affected due to the protest, the metropolis has taken the initiative to resolve the problem. Acting Mayor of the metropolis Imtiyaz Alam stated that special monitoring is being carried out on the sanitation management situation and has instructed the contractor Shiva Gupta to immediately discuss the legitimate demands of the protesting sanitation workers and take the initiative to resolve it as soon as possible.

Acting Mayor Alam said that the metropolis is providing necessary coordination and facilitation so that the residents of the city do not face any inconvenience in sanitation services. According to him, efforts are being made to resolve the problem through dialogue among the stakeholders.

He reiterated the commitment of the Metropolitan Municipality not to allow sanitation services to be disrupted under any circumstances and informed that efforts are underway to find an early solution to the protest by reaching an agreement between the sanitation workers, contractor companies and the concerned parties.

The sanitation workers have indicated that the protest will continue until their demands related to salary increase, service facilities and labor rights are met. If the protest is prolonged, there is a possibility that the sanitation management of Birgunj will be further affected.
