Siraha police have arrested a fugitive accused in a rape and manslaughter case after 6 years.
Police arrested Birendra Kumar Yadav, 50, of Bariyarpatti Rural Municipality-5, from his house on Tuesday evening.
According to the police, on Asoj 30, 2076, the victim had filed a complaint alleging that Birendra had raped Anita Devi Saday, 25, the wife of local Ram Ekwal Saday, while she was sleeping at home by showing her a sharp weapon. While the investigation into the incident was ongoing, Anita was found dead with a wire tied around her neck in a field in Laxmipur Rural Municipality-5 on Kartik 21.
While further investigation was underway, Birendra was found unconscious in his room by his family on Kartik 26 after consuming poison. While he was undergoing treatment, the police recovered the deceased's mobile phone, the copper wire used in the incident, and a suicide note from Birendra's room.
According to the police, in the suicide note, Birendra confessed to killing Anita and mentioned that he consumed poison out of remorse. Birendra, who was absconding after the incident, was arrested by a team led by Chief Police Inspector Vishal Malla of the Area Police Office, Maheshpur Patar.
The police produced Birendra in court on Wednesday. The Siraha District Court has granted him a five-day remand for further investigation, informed District Police Office Siraha Chief Vasudev Pathak.
