A Nepali girl who was taken to India and forced to join an orchestra on the pretext of making her a TikTok star has been brought back home after being rescued.
The 13-year-old girl from Madhesh Province was brought to Motihari in Bihar four months ago by a girl from Dhanusha, who met her through the social media platform Facebook, promising to make her a TikTok star and get her a well-paid job. After reaching there, she was forced to work in an orchestra.
The girl was rescued with the help of Indian police after her family informed Kin Nepal, an organization working against human trafficking. After the rescue, she was kept in a large children's home in Bettiah, India.
Kin Nepal Birgunj branch chief Manu Rana informed that she was returned to Birgunj on Tuesday in coordination with the Kin India Foundation and the Motihari Child Welfare Committee. A week ago, six Nepali girls who were subjected to human trafficking and various forms of exploitation were rescued from different places in India by the same organization and brought to Nepal. Five of the rescued people have been handed over to their families, while one has been kept in a safe house for further protection and rehabilitation.
The Birgunj branch of Kin Nepal rescued them in coordination with the Adana India Foundation, the Nepali Embassy in New Delhi, and various child protection agencies in India. Among the rescued people, three are from Ramdhuni Municipality-1 in Sunsari, one from Shivraj Municipality in Kapilvastu, one from Manahari Rural Municipality in Makawanpur, and one from Sakhuwanankarkatti Municipality-3 in Siraha. Rana informed that five of them have been handed over to their families, while one has been kept in the Adana Nepal safe house for psychosocial counseling, protection, and rehabilitation.
One of the five was rescued from Gurugram in Haryana and the other five from a women's home in Siwan, Bihar. The Indian police said that they were rescued while they were being held hostage and subjected to physical and mental abuse, including forced prostitution and making them dance obscenely in an orchestra.
Rana said that in recent years, there has been an increasing number of cases of girls and women being lured to India by being introduced through social media and lured with foreign employment, entertainment or good income, and subjected to various forms of exploitation.
